Exciting New Exhibits and Events Coming to the Imperial Centre

The Imperial Centre for the Arts & Sciences in Rocky Mount is a cultural cornerstone for art, science, and entertainment, offering dynamic experiences for all ages. With a history dating back to 1952, when it was one of the nation’s first children’s museums, the Centre continues to inspire curiosity and creativity through interactive exhibits, educational programs, and art installations. Here’s what’s new and coming soon:
Children’s Museum & Science Center
Temporary Closure for Exhibit Change
The Children’s Museum & Science Center will be closed January 6–24, 2025, as they prepare for their highly anticipated new exhibit.
New Exhibit: Turtle Travels
Dates: January 25 – May 4, 2025
Discover the fascinating world of turtles and tortoises in Turtle Travels. This engaging exhibit highlights the challenges these reptiles face, from habitat loss to the international pet trade, and empowers visitors to help them survive and thrive.
Interactive features include:
•A giant board game, Turtle Migration.
•Hands-on telemetry to track a hidden turtle.
•Shell-shape comparisons showcasing how designs suit different lifestyles.
•A chance to design a turtle-friendly housing development.
•A unique perspective of a loggerhead sea turtle’s underwater journey.
Adding to the excitement, the museum has welcomed a new special assistant to the curator of exhibitions: George, a 30-year-old Congo African Grey parrot, who’s sure to delight visitors of all ages.
Art Exhibits at the Maria V. Howard Art Center
The art center is currently hosting three incredible exhibits featuring regional and nationally recognized artists. Visits to the Art Center are FREE.
Deeply Rooted
Artist: Erin C. (Stewart) Day
A Rocky Mount native, Erin Day draws inspiration from nature, capturing the beauty of birds, flowers, and landscapes in vibrant watercolors, oils, and pastels. Her work is a celebration of the natural world and her passion for creative expression in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, weaving, and bookbinding.
Beyond the Liminal Rift
Artist: Scott Eagle
Scott Eagle, an artist and associate professor at East Carolina University, explores dualities such as life and death, creation and destruction, and nature and artifice in his evocative collection. Known for his deep, thought-provoking pieces, Eagle’s work bridges the gap between complex ideas and stunning visuals, captivating audiences on an intellectual and emotional level.
Cultural Ancestry
Artist: Eric McRay
Eric McRay’s exhibit weaves rich storytelling with bold, diverse artistic styles. A celebrated artist and educator, McRay’s work spans themes and techniques, showcasing his mastery of visual language. From spontaneous and expressive pieces to carefully structured designs, McRay’s exhibit is a testament to the power of exploration and creativity.
Theatre at the Imperial Centre: The Addams Family Musical
Performances:
•March 28–29 and April 4–5 at 7:30 PM
•March 30 and April 6 at 2:00 PM
Join the Imperial Centre Theatre for a spooky, hilarious, and heartwarming production of The Addams Family Musical. Bring the whole family to enjoy the
quirky adventures of everyone’s favorite macabre household.
