UNC Health Nash: Transforming Healthcare Excellence in Nash & Edgecombe Counties

TWIN COUNTY MEDIA

Over the past decade, UNC Health Nash has made significant strides in improving healthcare services, facilities, and community engagement, positioning itself as a cornerstone of the local healthcare system and an asset to the region's appeal for prospective residents.

UNC Health Nash’s journey over the last ten years has been nothing short of remarkable. One of the most significant achievements is the consistent recognition from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that evaluates hospital performance. For five consecutive years, UNC Health Nash has earned an "A" grade, reflecting its commitment to patient safety and quality care. Additionally, the hospital has been honored with the Top Hospital designation from Leapfrog, a four-star rating from CMS, and has been ranked among the Top 25 Best Hospitals in North Carolina by Business North Carolina for three consecutive years.

A decade ago, UNC Health Nash faced challenges, including lower ratings and a one-star CMS designation. Today, thanks to the leadership of the board of commissioners, medical staff, and the dedication of the entire team, the hospital has transformed into a beacon of quality and patient experience. Major milestones include the opening of the revamped Emergency Department and new Heart Center in 2014, a new Women’s Center in 2016, and the expansion of the Danny Talbott Cancer Center in 2017.

Key collaborations have also bolstered the hospital's growth. In 2019, UNC Health Nash and Boice-Willis Clinic unified their Cardiology resources, leading to a more robust local cardiology service line and the opening of a heart failure clinic that provides advanced treatments. Partnerships with UNC Physicians Network and local practices have resulted in expanded services in general surgery, urology, orthopedics, and infectious disease, enhancing patient care and convenience.

In recent years, UNC Health Nash has refocused its mission on improving the health and wellbeing of the community. The strategic vision is to establish itself as the region’s market leader through expanded service offerings, exceptional quality, and community engagement. This mission underscores the hospital's commitment to providing top-notch services close to home, ensuring residents do not have to travel far for quality care.

Like many healthcare institutions, UNC Health Nash faced significant challenges during the pandemic. The strain on healthcare staff and the exacerbation of the nursing workforce shortage were particularly tough. However, the hospital's ability to remain flexible, innovate with new approaches, and stay focused on strategic goals enabled it to navigate these challenges successfully. The visionary leadership of the board of commissioners was crucial in steering the hospital through these turbulent times.

UNC Health Nash is currently ranked 13th among North Carolina hospitals, according to Business North Carolina. This ranking, achieved for the third consecutive year, is a testament to the hospital's ongoing commitment to quality care. The hospital's progress is evident in the jump from 22nd place in 2022 to 13th place in 2024. This achievement is attributed to a dyad leadership approach, which pairs physician and nurse leaders to drive improvements in specific service lines, resulting in a 41% reduction in Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) over the past year.

Looking to the future, UNC Health Nash has several exciting expansions planned. The most notable is a new inpatient hospital tower, currently in the exploratory and design stages. This tower will offer modern, spacious patient rooms and improved operational efficiency. The project is expected to begin construction within the next year and is slated for completion in 18-24 months.

Additionally, the hospital began laying the groundwork this year to become a transfer-in facility for surrounding community hospitals, and has accepted nearly 500 patients in the first year alone. Plans also include expanding the Community Paramedic Program, building new medical office buildings in western and southwestern Nash County, and taking over operations of the urgent care facility on the hospital campus.

UNC Health Nash is deeply committed to engaging with the community throughout its expansion process. Through forums, the Community Health Needs Assessment, and other polls, the hospital ensures that community voices are included in decision-making processes.

The hospital’s expansions are being funded through a mix of reserves and tax-free bonds, with step-by-step approvals required from the board of commissioners and regulatory bodies. While donations and grants are not part of the funding strategy for the new inpatient tower, there will be opportunities for naming rights for individuals and businesses looking to make a lasting impact on the community's health.

Local businesses and community leaders play a vital role in supporting UNC Health Nash’s growth and development. By partnering with the UNC Health Nash Foundation, businesses can contribute to transitional care programs that improve medical outcomes and reduce overall healthcare costs. Healthy individuals are more likely to engage in activities that drive economic and social progress, making this partnership beneficial for the entire community.

UNC Health Nash has made significant strides over the past decade, transforming into a top-tier healthcare provider and a vital part of Nash and Edgecombe counties. As the hospital continues to expand and improve, it plays a crucial role in enhancing the region's appeal to prospective residents, ensuring that high-quality healthcare is available close to home.
