Clyde Bailey’s Legacy Shines: Jewelry, Community, and a Tradition of Giving

For over seven decades, Bailey’s Fine Jewelry has been more than a jewelry store—it’s been a cornerstone of the Rocky Mount community. From a tiny 11-foot-wide shop in downtown Rocky Mount to a multi-location luxury brand, the story of Bailey’s is a story of family, passion, and community connection.

Clyde Bailey Jr. grew up literally running around his parents’ small jewelry shop, immersed in displays and watchmaking tools. That early exposure didn’t just spark his love for jewelry; it instilled a sense of entrepreneurship and the joy of serving people. Following in his father’s footsteps, Clyde pursued formal training as a watchmaker, eventually bringing a fresh vision and expertise to the family business.

Bailey’s Fine Jewelry, originally founded in 1948 by Clyde Sr. and “Mama” Ann Bailey, became a family legacy. After completing his gemology education in Los Angeles, Clyde Jr. returned to Rocky Mount with his high-school sweetheart, Jane, ready to expand the business. Under their guidance, Bailey’s grew beyond its original location, opening additional stores in Greenville, Raleigh, Cary, and beyond. Yet, Rocky Mount has always remained the heart of Bailey’s—a place rich with personal meaning and community connections.

What truly sets Bailey’s apart is its dedication to relationships. Store traditions and multigenerational customers create a culture that goes far beyond sales. There’s the crew of gentlemen who shop together every Christmas Eve, celebrating the season with a toast before leaving. Or the young woman who returned as an adult to purchase her first luxury watch from the very associate who drove her home from the hospital as a newborn. Stories like these illustrate the deep bonds Bailey’s forms with its community.

Serving Rocky Mount goes hand-in-hand with giving back. The Bailey family has consistently woven philanthropy into the fabric of their business, with employees learning firsthand what it means to serve the community with heart and care.

One standout initiative is A Time to Give. This innovative program provides free watch battery replacements for patrons while supporting local causes. Instead of charging for the service—typically $10 to $15 per battery—Bailey’s asks for a donation, with proceeds directed to different nonprofit organizations each month. Patrons have contributed anywhere from $1 to $200, and since its launch in 2008, A Time to Give has raised more than $950,000 for the communities Bailey’s Fine Jewelry serves.

This fall, Bailey’s continues its tradition of celebration with two special events. The Fall Fashion Show partners with the Power of Pink Breast Care Fund, combining style, jewelry, and philanthropy for a cause close to many hearts. From coordinating local boutiques to cheering on Bailey’s team members strutting the runway, the event promises fun, glamour, and community spirit. Meanwhile, the Antique & Vintage Jewelry Show brings meticulously curated pieces to Bailey’s locations, offering collectors and enthusiasts a chance to see and own rare jewelry treasures from the 1920s through the 1980s.

Whether it’s a cherished tradition, a milestone celebration, or a philanthropic endeavor, Bailey’s Fine Jewelry remains a place where the magic of jewelry intersects with the heart of Rocky Mount. With the upcoming shows and the ongoing success of A Time to Give, Clyde Bailey’s legacy of craft, connection, and community shines brighter than ever.
