In just a couple of weeks, Rocky Mount will once again welcome one of its most anticipated community events—Tackle the Tar, a 5K obstacle course mud run that blends challenge, fun, and purpose in a way that continues to bring people together year after year.
Set for May 16 at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex, the event has become a signature experience in the Twin Counties. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount, Tackle the Tar is more than just a race—it’s a community-driven effort that turns a day of obstacles and mud into meaningful impact.
Participants can expect a course filled with more than 20 obstacles, including mud pits, climbing walls, ropes, and water challenges. While the course offers a physical challenge, it is designed to be accessible and welcoming, with a variety of heats available for competitive runners, first responders, college participants, families, and those simply looking to enjoy a fun and memorable day. A dedicated kids race also ensures younger participants have the chance to be part of the experience.
What truly sets Tackle the Tar apart is the purpose behind it. Proceeds from the event support scholarships for students in Nash and Edgecombe counties, helping provide access to higher education at Nash Community College, Edgecombe Community College, and North Carolina Wesleyan University. Each runner, volunteer, and sponsor plays a role in creating opportunities for local students, reinforcing the idea that community events can have a lasting impact well beyond the day itself.
The success of the event continues to be driven by strong community involvement. From participants and volunteers to sponsors and local businesses, Tackle the Tar reflects what is possible when a community comes together around a shared goal.
As race day approaches, the excitement continues to build. Heats begin at 8:45 a.m., setting the stage for a morning filled with energy, teamwork, and a shared sense of purpose. Whether participants are taking on the course, volunteering behind the scenes, or cheering from the sidelines, Tackle the Tar offers a unique opportunity to connect, give back, and be part of something meaningful.
With just weeks to go, the message is clear: Tackle the Tar is more than an obstacle course—it’s a celebration of community, a commitment to supporting local students, and a reminder that sometimes the best way to make an impact… is to get a little muddy.
