How 2,000 Tiny Turtles Are Racing Toward a Brighter Future for Twin County Kids

Rocky Mount, NC — On September 6, thousands of little green turtles will take the plunge into the Tar River from the Peachtree Street Bridge. At first glance, it might look like just a quirky community tradition. But behind every $5 turtle adoption is a much bigger story — one about hope, opportunity, and brighter futures for the 1,800 youth served by the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tar River Region.

This year’s Teeny Tiny Turtles on the Tar race at Rocky Mount Mills isn’t just about winning prizes (though lucky adopters could snag up to $500). It’s about rallying a community around children who need safe spaces to learn, grow, and dream.

For just $5, anyone can adopt a turtle. That small act ripples far beyond the racecourse. The funds raised go directly into afterschool programs, mentorship opportunities, meals, and enrichment activities for young people in Nash and Edgecombe counties.

“Every turtle represents more than a chance at a cash prize,” said Desiree Dolberry, Director of Development at the Boys & Girls Clubs. “It represents a child gaining confidence, discovering new skills, and having a safe place to go after school. That’s what makes this event so powerful.”

While it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of thousands of turtles bobbing their way down the river, the symbolism runs deeper. The event mirrors the Clubs’ mission: each turtle — like each child — deserves guidance, encouragement, and the chance to reach the finish line strong.

Organizers have set a bold 2025 goal: selling 2,000 turtle adoptions. If met, it would mean a significant boost in resources for programs that directly support local youth.

The race has quickly become a favorite for families and businesses alike, blending fun with philanthropy. Local partners step up year after year, helping to sponsor turtles, spread the word, and even cheer from the bridge as the race unfolds.

And for the kids who benefit, it’s not just a fundraiser — it’s proof that their community believes in them.

Join the Race

The Teeny Tiny Turtles on the Tar event kicks off Saturday, September 6, at 10:00 a.m. at Rocky Mount Mills. Turtle adoptions are open now at duckrace.com/rockymount.

With each adoption, neighbors aren’t just buying a chance to win — they’re investing in the next generation of leaders, dreamers, and doers in the Twin Counties.

As Dolberry put it: “It’s about making sure every child knows their community is rooting for them. And sometimes, that starts with a turtle.”
