The Organization Helping Shape Downtown Rocky Mount for More Than 40 Years

When people think about downtown Rocky Mount, they often think of the Imperial Centre, Fire Station No. 2, the Farmers Market, restored historic buildings, public art, and the continued revitalization of the city's historic core.

What many may not realize is that one nonprofit organization has quietly played a significant role in helping make much of that possible.

Downtown Renaissance, Inc. (DRI) was established in 1985 as a nonprofit organization with one mission: to encourage the revitalization and long-term success of downtown Rocky Mount. Formed through the support of local businesses and community leaders, DRI has spent four decades working behind the scenes to preserve historic buildings, encourage redevelopment, and invest in projects that strengthen the heart of the city.

Since its founding, DRI has partnered with private businesses, preservation organizations, and the City of Rocky Mount on dozens of projects aimed at protecting the city's architectural heritage while creating new opportunities for growth. From funding downtown planning studies to helping acquire key historic properties, the organization has consistently focused on preserving what makes downtown Rocky Mount unique.

Among DRI's most impactful contributions has been its long-standing involvement with the Imperial Centre. Beginning in the 1980s, the organization helped promote redevelopment ideas, facilitated property acquisition, and continued supporting the project until the City ultimately acquired the facility. Today, the Imperial Centre stands as one of downtown Rocky Mount's most recognizable cultural landmarks.

DRI also played an instrumental role in promoting the creation of Rocky Mount's Downtown Farmers Market, helping facilitate land acquisition and securing funding that would ultimately contribute to downtown redevelopment efforts.

Throughout the years, the organization has worked to preserve numerous historic properties, including Fire Station No. 2, the Summerlin House, the May & Gorham Building, the Baldwin Building, and several other historic downtown structures. By acquiring properties, placing protective covenants on buildings, and encouraging thoughtful rehabilitation, DRI has helped ensure that Rocky Mount's history continues to be part of its future.

Beyond historic preservation, DRI has continued investing in projects that celebrate the city's culture and identity. Recent initiatives include commissioning murals honoring Rocky Mount's rich musical heritage and creating downtown wayfinding maps that encourage residents and visitors to explore local restaurants, businesses, and attractions.

Today, Downtown Renaissance, Inc. remains committed to collaborating with community partners to promote meaningful redevelopment while preserving the distinctive character that makes downtown Rocky Mount special. More than forty years after its founding, the organization's work continues to shape the city's future—one project, one building, and one investment at a time.
