Some artists paint landscapes. Others paint portraits.
For Rocky Mount native Lisa Meadows, art begins with a story.
In the latest edition of Tar River Art & Culture Magazine, we sit down with the lifelong Rocky Mount resident to discuss her artistic journey, the inspirations behind her work, and her vision for the future of the local arts community.
Raised in a family deeply connected to Rocky Mount's history and traditions, Meadows developed a love for storytelling at an early age. That appreciation for narrative continues to influence her artwork today, with many of her pieces inspired by music, literature, personal experiences, and the people and places that have shaped her life.
Her distinctive "interior devil" series explores themes of self-doubt, perseverance, hope, and personal growth. Drawing inspiration from song lyrics, historical figures, and everyday life, Meadows creates works that encourage viewers to find their own meaning and connection within each piece.
Beyond her own artwork, Meadows is passionate about the future of Rocky Mount's arts scene. In the feature, she shares her thoughts on the city's rich artistic history, the role the arts can play in shaping Rocky Mount's identity, and opportunities to strengthen the creative community for future generations.
It's a thoughtful conversation about creativity, community, and the power of storytelling through art.
