This weekend the Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown returns to downtown Rocky Mount on the lawn of the Helen P. Gay Rocky Mount Historic Train Station. Along with the barbecue competition, the event will also bring a number of wonderful entertainment options, making this an event for everyone to check out.

Plan to attend the Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown on the lawn of the Helen P. Gay Rocky Mount Historic Train Station this Friday and Saturday.

The event features a barbecue contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Participants will be judged by a panel on chicken, pork ribs, pork, and brisket. Participants will have an opportunity to be named Grand Champion, and they can also receive additional prizes in individual categories. In total, $20,000 is up for grabs.

The event is a great opportunity for pitmasters who want to participate in a KCBS sanctioned event, and over 25 pitmasters will participate in this year’s Throwdown.

Guests in attendance will be able to purchase cups for $1 each to sample one meat from a participating pitmaster. Guests will be able to vote for the People’s Choice winner.

Last year, Hold Your Horses BBQ out of Georgia won Grand Champion as well as individual awards in pork and brisket.

The kick-off event begins at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13 with a beer garden, and several vendors along with a kids zone play area with inflatables at nearby Station Square. The Tams, an R&B and Beach music group from Atlanta, will perform at 7 p.m.

The fun returns at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the kids zone, food and commercial vendors, beer garden, Rocky Mount Public Utilities Exhibit area, and more live music.

Denver Nixon will be on stage from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Chris Hagan will perform from 1–2:30 p.m.

Push Play will perform live 3:00–4:30 p.m.

The event will conclude with an awards ceremony from 5 to 6 p.m.

The Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown is sponsored by North Carolina Wesleyan University, PNC Bank, Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce, Harlem Brew South, NC Soybean Producers Association and Station Square Downtown Rocky Mount.

The Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown promises to be a family-friendly event offering fun for kids along with a variety of music from talented artists, a wide range of vendors, and a great chance to sample some delicious barbecue.
